Incomplete Updates and Registry Checks

Yesterday, while having a casual conversation with a colleague, he made a comment that why is it that whenever installing something on Windows, it requires a reboot where as it is so nice on Unix and a reboot is needed only if it is needed. Secondly, how can an end user find out whether a reboot is indeed needed and how does the automatic security updates check make a determination that a reboot is required. The second question was an interesting one – there had to be something in the registry that indicates that but where was the question.
