SQL Server 2005 Best Practices Analyzer

In case you have not downloaded the BPA already, I would recommend that you do so. You can get it from this URL:

BPA captures the data used for Windows and SQL Server configuration and has a list of pre-definedbest practices and recommendations to help you identify any potential issues in your environment. It is a very simple install and takes only a few seconds to install and when you launch it, the default screen looks like this:


You can scan three types of SQL Server Services –> the SQL Server Service, SSIS and SSAS. One can also choose to schedule the scans.


And when you run the report after doing the configuration, the report can organized in several different ways as well as exported out. Here is a sample run against one of the sample instances :


You can play around with the scans of different services to see the results in your pre-production and benchmark environments and then take those recommendations and evaluate them and apply them in your production environment. This along with the other health check tools from Microsoft for SQL Server should be run on a regular basis to ensure that the best practices are being followed.
