SQL Server Build Versions

Posted by decipherinfosys on April 15, 2008

We are sure that in your day to day work, you must have seen environments where the different instances of SQL Server had different patch levels applied to them and by looking at the output of the version of the build, those numbers hardly make sense if you do not have a cross reference list to cross verify the build and the patch levels.

Here is an excellent URL which not only summarizes all the build versions in SQL Server (version 6.5, 7, 2000, 2005 and 2008 ) but also has links to the different KB articles for each one of those patch sets.

One should make sure that their environments are patched up properly. Regarding the Cumulative Updates (Hot Fixes), if there are specific issues that you are facing that are fixed by those updates, then only apply them to your production environment else it is better to wait for the next service pack.
